Vienna is an incredible destination to visit in the summer. You can book an accommodation at some of the top areas to stay in Vienna and do many fantastic things.

To save you some trouble, we have compiled a list of fun activities you can do during the summer in Vienna.

So grab that airport shuttle and head for the city center.

Things to Do in Vienna During the Summer

Go crazy at Prater Amusement Park

Prater is a huge park located north of the city center. The large greenery of the park is perfect for hiking, cycling or relaxing. Near here, you’ll find the Prater Amusement Park (or Wurstelprater), one of the oldest ones in the world.

The famous Ferris Wheel, called the Wiener Riesenrad, can be seen here, which still has its old wooden cabins.

Additionally, the amusement park has lots of rides for all ages, like bumper cars, roller coasters, a house of horror and many others.

Visit the outdoor pools and the beach

Vienna has many outdoor pools, as well as beaches around the city. This allows the visitors to chill in the summer heat. To get to the beaches, get to Alte Donau station on the subway, and then run right outside of the station so you are walking north along Arbeiterstrandbadstraße. There will be several places to enter on the right hand side, but remember that there’s a small entrance fee.

Hiking

Vienna has many lush forestry hiking trails which are great to use throughout the summer. Some of the trails are really challenging, with steep uphill sections, however once you get to the top you will be amazed by the fantastic view. A few of the more challenging trails are 1, 1a, 2 and 3, ranging from 7.2km – 15km.

A festival at Rathausplatz

Rathausplatz sits directly in front of the Vienna City Hall (Rathaus). Many festivals can be visited throughout the year so check out some of the upcoming events you can visit when planning your trip to Vienna.

Relax in a Park

Many parks can be spotted throughout the city, so chilling on a hot afternoon in one of them is a great idea. Some of the best ones are Burggarten, Prater Park, Augarten and Stadtpark. During the summer you will often find lots of other sun seekers sunbathing, enjoying picnics or just relaxing in these areas.

A stroll at the Schönbrunn Park

Starting from mid spring, the Schönbrunn Park and its Gardens have some of the most beautiful flower arrangements. These are often done in creative patterns and shapes, making it a perfect spot for pictures.

The park is huge and you could spend the whole afternoon here. Up from the top of the hill, you will get to admire the perfect views of the city skyline.

The park is free to enter, and you only need to pay for extras for visiting the Palace, the Zoo and the many other attractions on the grounds.

Have a drink along the Canal

Along the Danube Canal there are a lot of outdoor bars with deckchairs that open in the summer. These bars are perfect for chilling in the afternoon and into the evening, while having a nice cold beer. One of the most recommended one is Strandbar Herrmann, a place which has an artificial sandy beach and sometimes a DJ music performance.
 

Rent a City Bike

Vienna is really bike-friendly, so a good way for urban exploring is renting a city bike. You’ll find lots of public City Bike stands around the city, all accessible using your credit card. Most of them charge from €1-€4/hour, depending on how long you rent it for. Once you get a bike, getting around is fast, safe, fun and easy.

Visit the Schönbrunn outdoor music festival

Schönbrunn, one of Vienna’s most famous palaces, plays host to an outdoor music concert every year around May. Beautiful classical music performed by the Vienna Philharmonic can be heard here, experienced in a wonderful Viennese setting. What would make a better summer day?
 

Grab a meal at a restaurant patio

Dining outside during the summer is a huge part of the Viennese culture. You’ll see many restaurants lined on the streets, offering decking and seating areas outside the restaurants, allowing the hungry visitors to enjoy an outdoor dining experience.
 

Check the Zoo

Vienna has a large Zoo located in the Schönbrunn Park, full of exotics animals and species from all around the world, accommodated in spacious and really dignified living spaces. During the summer, you may find the animals sunbathing while you walk around and quietly take your pictures.

The Belvedere Gardens

The Belvedere is similar to the Schönbrunn, offering a free garden area for you to walk in. From the top of the north palace, you’ll get to enjoy the city skyline. Most of all, there’s a large pond in front of the palace, so you can take some pretty cool photos while there.

Take a gelato-break

The Gelato (ice cream) in Vienna is to die for. Many places throughout Vienna offer a large range of interestingly flavored high-quality gelato, so don’t think to leave without having some. A few of the most popular places are Bortolotti at Mariahilfer Straße and Zanoni & Zanoni near Stephansplatz.
 

The Danube Island festival (Donauinselfest)

In just a few stops ride on the subway from Vienna’s city center to the north, you’ll land on the Donauinsel. This is actually a long island in the middle of the Danube River and every summer, an open air music festival is taking place, featuring live bands, food stalls and more. So make sue to drop by if you’re visiting in June.

Vienna is famous for its charm and class, always attracting visitors from all corners of the world. There are many things to do during the summer, even more so than things to do during winter in Vienna.
