Wien Vienna City Centre Innerstadt

Vienna’s is divided in 23 districts (or neighborhoods) which are called Bezirke all reachable by Wien-Schwechat Airport transfer. Basically, the higher the number of the district, the further it is from the city center.

For example, District 1 is Inner City (or Innere Stadt), being the most central and most popular neighborhood.

Here, we’ll be presenting the top areas in Vienna to stay at along with few hotel recommendations to make your stay decision even easier.

Top Areas to Stay in Vienna

Innere Stadt District

The Inner City is the very heart of Vienna and it’s a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. For anyone wondering, you’ll need around one hour to walk through the whole district, however having in mind the distractions such as the old charming streets, countless restaurants, bars and cafes will easily keep you busy for a whole day. The main square Stephansplatz is always a good starting point, slowly progressing towards the Golden U shopping neighborhood, or more specifically the Kärntner Strasse, for some quality shopping.

Hotel Sacher Wien

If you consider to stay at the very heart of Vienna, then you should consider staying in the Hotel Sacher Wien (a 5-star hotel), decorated in Victorian-era style, right opposite the Vienna State Opera. If this place is above your budget, then you can consider the top city line Kaiserin Elisabeth Hotel (a 4-star hotel), which is sitting right next to the St. Stephen's Cathedral and in walking distance to The Hofburg. It is a traditional hotel with everything you may need.

Leopoldstadt District

This is one of the most frequent Vienna spots and holder of the Giant Wheel, laying on the island between Danube and Danube Canal. Few bridges connect the Leopoldstadt with the Innere Stadt over the Danube Canal and once you’re there, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the biggest and greenest space called Prater Public Park. Basically, the Leopoldstadt district starts at the city center and stretches through the Danube River and continues up to northeast Vienna. Here you can also see the very popular Wiener Riesenrad Wheel, amazing bars and restaurants and a sand beach along the Danube Canal.

Our hotel recommendation in this district starts with the Hotel City Central (a 4-star hotel), which can be accessed from the Innere Stadt, right across the canal. The place has an amazing service and a good value. Just make sure to ask for a room that’s away from the main street for a peaceful stay. If you’re on a tighter budget, you can stay at the Kunsthof Hotel (a 3-star hotel), which is neatly sitting near the Prater and the Vienna Exhibition Centre. Here you’ll get a complimentary breakfast buffet, paired with some excellent hotel and business services. There’s an underground station only 300 meters away from the Kunsthof Hotel, so it’s easy to reach all nearby attractions.

Landstrasse District

Siting on the right bank of Danube, the Landstrasse is the 3rd District, and home to the Belvedere Palace and Gardens and the Wien Mitte railway station. Right next to the Landstrasse District you can find the Wieden district, so if you enjoy shopping or simply strolling, you are at the right spot. If you consider staying at this district, we recommend the Hotel Am Konzerthaus (a 4-star hotel), offering a quiet and very comfortable stay in spacious rooms. The best part is that you can reach the city center in only 10-15 minutes of walking.

Schleifmühlgasse District

Being located south of Innere Stadt, the Schleifmuhlgasse district is one of Vienna’s most colorful and fashion-flavored neighborhoods. Countless of art galleries can be seen at any corner pouring their goodies on the streets during the summer. Side by side with the galleries, here you can enjoy many classy restaurants and whiskey bars, high fashion boutiques, tiny flower shops and so much more. Close by, you can stroll down to the popular shopping street Mariahilferstrasse, the Vienna’s main train station - Wien Westbahnhof, as well as the aromatic outdoor marketplace Naschmarkt.

If you like what you read, then we recommend you staying at the Best Western Premier Hotel Kaiserhof (a 4-star hotel) offering an amazing breakfast and high quality service for a good price. There are a lot of restaurants very close and the city center is only 10 minutes away.

Spittelberg and Neubau Districts

The Spittelberg District is mainly known for the vibrant nightlife and budget accommodations, making it a perfect spot for the younger travelers. Here you can find many cafes, bars, pubs, budget-friendly restaurants and street-food vendors. It is pretty great because a lot of cheaper accommodations can be found in the area, at a 20 minute walking distance from the very center of the city. It is mostly recommended for those looking for a nighttime fun right next to their accommodation.

Spittelberg is sitting within the Neubau District, which is the home of the very famous Museumsquartier - an amazing and unified front of many Viennese museums. Here you can do a lot of things, see art and have coffee or a beer at one of the geometrically shaped plastic seats in the middle. Hence, we recommend the K+K Hotel Maria Theresia Vienna (a 4-star hotel), a contemporary style hotel, as a great place to stay next to the Museum Quarter and the shopping zone. The hotel is located at a very brief stroll to the main pedestrian shopping zone and the Stephanzplatz, making it pretty convenient for a modern stay in Vienna. For a more budget friendly place, we recommend the Kugel Hotel (a 3-star hotel) close to many bus and tram stops and not far from the Museumsquartier. If you consider walking to the city center, it may take you about half an hour.

Vienna is beautiful no matter where you stay. The city center can be reached by public transportation or a comfortable taxi company ride. So when you plan your trip, make sure to choose the best airport transfer and enjoy the trip.
