Business Travel Tips When in Vienna

Central Vienna in an afternoon

Grab a taxi service from the hotel to the Saint Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna’s greatest symbol in the heart of the city, and look up to see the colorful roof. When you’re done, take Kärntner Strasse straight to the famous Vienna Opera House (or Wiener Staatsoper), one of the beacons of the musical world. If you are in the mood, you can take a tour into the Vienna Opera, but do note that that it’s only open at noon and it’s a good move to buy the tickets through their website.

Make sure to head to the Hofburg Palace, just 6 minutes away straight through Josefsplatz. This palace is the former residence of the Habsburgs, who ruled for more than six centuries. Continue your stroll a bit further and you’ll find yourself along the monumental Ringstrasse, where you can observe spectacular buildings like the City Hall, the Museum of Art History, the Natural History Museum, the Austrian Parliament and the Burgtheater (the Imperial Theater of the court).

Absorb Vienna in a day

If your schedule allows you and you can spare a whole day in Vienna, then you can speed up your tempo and see a lot of the city. This way, you can continue your tour from the Ringstrasse Avenue and take the tram to a slightly more contemporary urban corner. Hop-off at the Hetzgasse stop, where you’ll see a block of houses called Hundertwasserhaus with a breathtaking architecture, colorful and with fanciful shapes.

Another important stop in Vienna is the Prater – the greenest green you had ever seen. Here you can see the very famous Giant Ferris wheel and many other attractions. The Giant Ferris wheel is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city. Built between 1896 and 1897 by the English engineer Walter Basset, it was unique in its time. If the weather is nice and you have completed your city tour by visiting Vienna’s most important spots, then you can hit the Prater.

If you wish to see some world-renowned attractions, you can also visit the Madame Tussauds museum, where you can see wax figures of celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Empress Sissi, Gustav Klimt, Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman to name a few

Shopping is good

If you perhaps seen the most important parts of Vienna, you can always pamper yourself with some well-deserved shopping. The liveliest shopping areas in Vienna are Mariahilfer Strasse and the area around the Naschmarkt. Every Saturday from 6:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m, an antique marketplace with 400 stalls is set up, offering really good prices for interesting items. And if you feel like hunting unique Viennese-made items, it’s best if you go to some of the local studios where they craft beautiful lamps, silver dinnerware and flatware, such as Lobmeyr, Woka Lamps Vienna or Wiener Silber Manufactur.

Unique concept of concert cafes

If you are a music lover, you’re in luck. The schedules of the great operas in Vienna are accompanied by the truly cultural offering of the cafes and the concert halls. You can hear typical waltzes, jazz or classic Viennese songs at so many places. Café Schwarzenberg on the Ringstrasse for example, is one of the oldest cafes in Vienna. Right across the street, the Imperial tells the tales of visitors like Sigmund Freud and Anton Bruckner. While enjoying the elegant atmosphere, you can order a piece of imperial cake, get a souvenir or enjoy the music of a Bösendorfer grand piano.

Similarly, the Café Restaurante Residenz has great tunes to offer in a room upstairs, along with a handmade Apfelstrudel (apple pie) at the bakery found in the basement. Additionally, Schmid Hansl is a café-concert space where you can hear traditional Viennese songs, but jazz, operettas and popular music are not excluded from the program.

Nightlife in Vienna

If you are one of the lucky few who get to spend a free weekend in Vienna while on a business trip, experiencing the Vienna’s nightlife is a must. As a city of music, Vienna has some of the most amazing music venues and nightclubs. A top recommendation is always the Gürtel Avenue, which is the center of the Viennese nightlife. A quick visit to the most legendary nightclub Flex is also mandatory if you want to have a good time, and don’t forget to pop-in to the Grelle Forelle and Pratersauna clubs for some serious partying.

Taste of Vienna

Viennese cuisine has some pretty typical dishes that must be tried at least once. The most popular dish is the Schnitzel and the city has some top places to have a Wiener Schnitzel. Aside from this famous dish, Vienna is also known for its beer and wine consumption, so you can enjoy a high-quality drink nearly anywhere.

When you’re done with the tasty meal, head to the Café Sacher to try the heavenly Sacher cake. And to share the sweet goodness of Vienna with your friends and family, just pop-in into some of the many Mozart chocolate stores and get some of the famous Mozartkugels. These chocolate candies filled with pistachio marzipan were created in 1890 by the chef Paul Fürst. The food in this city is really worth to try, so allow yourself a bit of enjoyment.
Even if you are on a business trip and your encounter with Vienna is brief, make the most of your time. So catch your Wien-Schwechat Airport transfer and start tailoring your agenda as tight as possible. We guarantee that you won’t be sorry.
