the best beer bars in vienna austria

Beer today comes in the most interesting shapes and sizes, opening the door for the boutique, craft beer to join our tables. Small breweries today offer a variety of chocolate, fruit or honey infused beers for the curious beer-drinkers to sip on, debate about and absorb the tempting aromas while standing at the bar. Vienna is one of the Europe’s destinations which can offer an interesting variety of craft beer pubs, so for the most ambitious beer-tasters, we recommend a prompt transportation via some Wien-Schwechat airport taxi in Vienna, to cut the impatience in half.

Mel’s Craft Beers & Diner Pub

Comfortably placed at the Wipplingerstraße 9, the Mel’s Craft Beers & Diner Pub shines bright with a long line of beer taps at the bar. If this doesn’t amaze you, rest assured that this place has 400 types of craft beers to offer! All of the craft beers are different and they range from Indian Pale Ales, up to Rogue American Amber Ales. Here you can find many craft brews originating from Belgium, Italy, Holland and Germany, but also rare American beers. As part of this long menu you can see few rare types of cider for those who prefer sweeter beverages. And since the beer list is never-ending, the staff here is well skilled to help you make your decision.

If you were wondering what the word “diner” is doing in this pub’s name, just open the food menu. You can find a variety of well prepared foods here, ranging from club sandwiches to chicken Ceasar salad. Hence, if your path meets this spot, make sure to order their malty and spicy Belgium ale - Der Verboden Vrucht.

Mel's Craft Beers & Diner Pub is centrally located, close to the best bars and dance clubs.

Lichtenthalerbräu Pub

Located at Liechtensteinstraße 108, the Lichtenthalerbräu pub is sitting inside a traditional tavern (Gasthaus) offering a cozy and laid back atmosphere for its thirsty guests. Here you can taste four or more craft beers which change regularly, while sitting right next to the central piece in the room - the copper brewing barrel. Each beer in the place is brewed “with a lot of love” by the Braumeister, making the pub to live by this claim. The Lichtenthaler Helles beer is constantly on the menu. It is an unfiltered pale lager which is perfect for the most refined beer seekers. You can also treat yourself with a pint of malty and chocolaty Rosemary IPA – being a spiced Indian Pale Ale with Slovakian Rosemary - and enjoy its delicious flavor.
There’s not really a long list of food dishes here, but the ones you can see are typically Viennese. Occasionally, you can come across a surprise dish, like the blue-cheese-burger, which is a must try. So, if you wish to loosen up with an unusual drink in your hand, grab a taxi service and come in the Lichtenthalerbräu pub.

The Brickmakers Pub & Kitchen

Laid at the Zieglergasse 42, the Brickmakers Ale & Cider House represents the beer heaven on earth. Standing proudly with a selection of 150 bottled beers and 29 taps, along with five menu pages of exclusive artisan brews from all corners of the world, the Brickmakers Pub & Kitchen in Vienna is a true temple of the largest Austrian beer collection. But beware of the pricing. Your initial reaction would be to rush out through the door, but keep in mind that we’re talking about the best beers in the world here, brewed with top-quality ingredients by independent micro-breweries.

The Brickmakers Pub & Kitchen Wien Vienna

When it comes to the food menu here, they offer the most traditional food that goes with beer - low and slow cooked Texas style BBQ. When you’re done with the dish, wash the smoky taste down with some fruity and creamy Cask Ale or Tiny rebel – One Inch Punch selection of beers.

Malefitz Pub

Located at the Meidlinger Markt, the Malefitz Pub is a unique location where you can try locally brewed craft beer and at a very good average price too. Offering a variety of 84 beers selection by Austrian microbreweries, together with few interesting imported ones, the Malefitz Pub offers quite intimate night out of tasting a plethora of honey-colored, chocolate brown or wood red craft beers. The choice here can be overwhelming and the beer-drinkers can get lost. Luckily, Alexander Fitz (one of the owners) is here to help you decide and teach you on the art of beer. So, if you head to the Malefitz Pub during your stay in Vienna, make sure to try their Black IPA.

Hawidere Pub

Sitting at Ullmannstraße 31 in the 15th District, the Hawidere Pub started as a hidden gem, only to grow into a 14 years old landmark. This pub is best known as a typical Viennese Gasthaus with an amazing charm. The name Hawidere is derived from “Habe die Ehre,” a greeting actually meaning “I have the honor”.

The interesting interior is lively set with self-grown tomatoes in beer crates and not-so-obvious details. Besides the craft beer collection from around the world, here you can find some carefully selected seasonal beers, ranging from IPAs to stouts and Porters. If you are not sure what you want, just talk to the owner, Bertl, who’d happily talk to you about the art of making beer while soaking his mouth in a glass of sour beer and explaining why this pub feels truly as one of the last living-rooms in the city.

But the most important mark of the Hawidere pub is the selection of their multilayered, mouthwatering burgers. If you visit this pub, be sure to trust the staff on their recommendations on craft beer to go with your food, and don’t leave without trying the strawberry Rubus, the DomRep Pils, or any of the sour beers they have here.

Curbing your desire for craft beer in truly easy in this city. Once you land, just catch an airport bus to Vienna, or hop on to the airport shuttle to Vienna, and you’ll be sitting on a long wooden bar in no time!
